Recent Reports from Brenham and Ennis 4/6-4/7/2018

4/6/-4/7/2018 Mike Jones, Senior Reporter

Took the trip April 6-7, from San Antonio to Brenham to Ennis and back to San Antonio via Hwy 16 in the Hill Country. There are several nice places out there but not widespread.

4/6/2018 The Brenham/Chapel Hill area of several nice locations on Highways/Roads 50, 390, 290, 36, Old Independence Rd., and Independence way. Going north on Hwy 50, north of Independence, there is a large 50+ acre field of Primrose on the west side of the highway.

4/6-4/7/2018 Best roads around Ennis with large fields of BB are 1181, 660, and Sugar Ridge Road. There is not widespread coverage but there are large displays of BB around. The area at the Meadow View Nature area on Bardwell Lake had thick coverage down by the water. A beautiful scene and nice sunset shot location. Sugar Ridge Road is beautiful anytime of year and there are some area of BB. According to the Ennis Visitors Center, the area should peak for most areas around the 15th-20th. Mach Rd. is a bust. Lots of BB but the property has been poorly kept and is not photogenic at all. The visitors center doesn't even recommed it at all. One route not mentioned is Parker Hill Rd. south of Palmer from IH-45 to FM 879. There is a massive field of BB on the west side of the road and up the hill. Best viewed driving north to south.

Back to SA via 84 west of Waco and 16 from Goldthwaite to Fredericksburg. Large field of BB north of Crawford on 317. Several Prairie Paintbrush on 84 between Evant and Goldthwaite. The flowers aren't known in my experience to be dense but they were strung out along that whole route. One front yard had a large amount of pink Prarie Paintbrush.

Hwy 16 south from Goldthwaite to Fredericksburg has the least amount of flowers I have ever seen. So disappointing.
