03-09-2005, 7:08 AM FlowerPower Joined on 03-08-2005 The Woodlands, Texas Posts 137 An open invitation to The Woodlands When you think of wildflowers your mind doesn't always race to the Houston area but we do have a nice assortment of wildflowers and usually one of the earliest shows.  The Woodlands is just a few miles north of Houston on I45 and not only is it a wildflower haven but a fun place to visit, shop and shoot photos.  Our natural areas are already bursting with Dewberry (Southern Blackberry) and Jasmine blooms.  Our byways (like the Texas highways) are planted with wildflower seeds and the crimson clover, corn flowers (bachelor buttons), bluebonnets and paintbrush are starting to show quite nicely.  Enjoy the many restaurants in our Town center, ride the water taxis all day for $6 and shop The Woodlands mall.  Just north of us in the Sam Houston forest you'll find lots of dogwood blooms over the next few weeks.  To the south we are just minutes away from Mercer Gardens where the assisted bluebonnets are full out in red, white and blue.  So next time you think wildflowers and want something a bit different give us a try here in The Woodlands. Given the present lack of rainfall, this might be the year of nature centers and botanical gardens where some watering has been given to the planted wildflowers. I encourage everyone to visit and patronize the nature centers and botanical gardens that support displays of native plants. Yes we sure could use some rain!  I was at the LBJ Wildflower Center a few years back and it was quite enjoyable!!  Thanks for the reminder Rich.  I've also just discovered that Beaumont has a ten acre aboretum that I need to check out in the near term.  I'm not sure what RITA might have done to them down that way?? If you go to the link I provided above for "March in Bloom", all those photos were taken at Mercer in the first nine days of March this year so you can see exactly what is in bloom at the Mercer Gardens now.  Their address is also in that same post.  One warning:  I45 between The Woodlands and Conroe is under consttuction and at times it is almost impossible to get through in under an hour.  Unfortunately there are NO close by alternatives so I suggest that if you must travel this strectch of highway make sure you do it in the morning (before 10:00 am) or be prepared for extreme frustration.  It will be this way for many months!! 04-16-2006, 10:52 PM Anonymous Re: An open invitation to The Woodlands Hi I live in Lake Charles Louisiana and am wanting to go hunt some bluebonnets during this next week while we are off on Spring Break. How far do I need to go to see some really nice fields of the flowers? I've heard so much about them and have seen photos and paintings. It is time to see tbem for real! I don't know where any of these places you have been talking about would be from where I am....please help me! Thanks Karen

Karen, It is rapidly getting past the prime time for bluebonnets along the coast and even north in East Central Texas. You might see some, but if it is a field it will likely be going to seed. The prime bloom period for the Coast is usually the first weekend in April. This year the bluebonnets bloomed earlier due to warmer temperatures. The closest report I remember seeing to the Louisiana border would be Lake Conroe, FM 830. RichO Hunting Texas Wildflowers    Report
