My first BlueBonnet pics of the year

This photo was taken on 3/26/05 in Cedar Park, on the grounds of Faubion Elementary School.  I was very disappointed in this year's turn out at this location.  Other years have had 4 times the number of BBs as there are this year.  What disturbs me is that, even though this promised to be a banner year, it seems that there are forces at play that are diminishing the habitats.  For instance, near my home in the Mansfield Dam area, that nasty rye grass has choked out mulititudes of BBs.  I hope and pray that the BBs are not going the way of the Texas Horned Toads that used to be in this area.

Very nicely done!  I moved this to the Central Texas wildflower sighting forum, because it deals mainly with the wildflower conditions in that area.

From my observations so far, we are experiencing a mixture of very early blooms with most plants not yet ready to bloom.

The majority of the plants I have seen on my trips are still 2-3 week from blooming.  We might still see a banner season as the ground temps rise and we get more sunshine.

What did the plants look like? Were there lots of smaller plants?

I would say that there were some that had not yet fully bloomed.  There is an area that has been full of plants in other years, but the plants just arent' there.  It is possible that the grounds keepers had given Mother Nature a little assistance by planting seeds there in other years.  What makes me think this is the proliferation of pink BBs.  You just don't see them out in the wild that much.  Perhaps financial considerations prevented seeding them last fall.  Just a guess..  This same thing seems to have occurred on the grounds of LakeLine Mall, which is only a couple of miles from Faubion.  There are have years, 1997 for example, when they had a fantastic crop there, of many colors.  You can view some of those here: http://www.photosbycolette.com/oddblues/oddbluespgp.html

That's a beautiful picture.  I have wondered about this year's crop too as it seems I'm not seeing as many blooms around here as normal, yet in Friday's Dallas Morning News, there was an article about this year's bluebonnets and how it is supposed to be a great year.  Let's hope so!
