Is it illegal to pick bluebonnets?

There is no state law that prohibits picking bluebonnets, but there might be local laws preventing picking wildflowers from roadsides.  Picking any wildflower decreases the chance of wildflowers blooming in that spot.  Most of the wildflowers are annuals and need to go to seed to continue the species in that area.

See this article from the Texas Dept of Public Safety about picking wildflowers and about stopping along the roadways.

Checked: 3/14/2006. This link is still posted and appears to still be valid. I would add that there might be local county laws that prevent stopping along county roads. Please be careful and be safe. Each year there are accidents due to unsafe stopping, crossing or turning on roads by "wildflower seekers." Do not ruin a beautiful experience viewing our wonderful Texas wildflowers with an accident.
