UPDATE: Bluebonnets in North Central Texas
Reply Quote

Currently, along the northside of I-30 in Arlington, the bluebonnets (BBs) are beginning to show above the masses of green foliage. This looks to be a good year along the highway, at least. Edit: The bluebonnets are out in swaths of blue along I-30, fairly mature, and not much else mixed in.

Edit: There is some blue on Loop 12, south of I-30, North and southbound though not very safe to stop. Along Spur 408 Southbound from Loop 12 split to I-20 there are swaths of blue as well, with some other flowers (in small quantities) in the mix, such as verbena. Butterflies and moths are everywhere and the smell is delightful.

In Cedar Hill State Park, there are rosettes along the trail that runs by the duck pond, but no significant bloomage. Edit: Bluebonnet blooms are springing up but I have not seen patches of blue as I have previously near the lake.

Edit: I have heard (from Texas Photo Forum: http://www.texasphotoforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44692 second post in that thread) that Bristol, TX is doing well with bluebonnets and the roads from Bristol to Ennis are fairly blue. I will check it out on Saturday or Sunday.

Thanks for the report on Cedar Hill State Park. I am actually glad to hear the rosettes have not begun to bloom yet. I was getting a bit worried we would have sudden and short season in North Texas.

Thanks for the update Edd,

It sounds like the blubonnets are blooming in the areas getting more sunshine and warmth.  Usually the North Texas areas are not in full bluebonnet flowering until April 8th - 21st.

Thanks Tony

Here is the direct link to the festivals page:

The interesting new thing I noticed was the walking tour of the Eagle Rock Golf Club.

I will take in Ennis on the way home tomorrow and report on conditions.  Just plan to follow the routes on their site which they've updated today.

Sugar Ridge road and the Bristol area are usually the first to show...other areas with larger fields usually do not begin to show until April 15th. I will be interested in finding out what you discover there.

Ennis is astonishing!

Made a whistle stop 2 hour trip through the Ennis back roads on my way back to Fort Worth from Brenham.  I could hardly believe my eyes.  I think the fields I saw were the largest and densest I have ever set eyes on.  I looked carefully at the flowers and most were still a little green and cone shaped at the top so not quite at their peak.  I'm no expert but I would think they will be absolutely perfect for the annual Bluebonnet Festival next weekend.  The other good thing is the grasses were pretty low so the fields looked fabulous.  I have never visited Ennis before at this time which I can't believe now since I only live an hour away!

I basically followed the routes per the Ennis website and had no time to explore any further.  Here are the notes I made:

Neck Rd: very large bluebonnet (BB) field where the road makes a sharp left.

Hampel/Neck intersection ("The Y"): a house here is welcoming visitors to take a circular drive around their property (nice big blue house).  When I opened the car door the aroma was overwhelming - the field is so large and dense.  Spoke with the owners who were rightly very proud of their display.

FM 813: very dense fields at numerous spots going all the way back as far as the eye can see.

Sugar Ridge Rd: this was the outstanding road - too many highlights to mention and in in such a short distance.  Absolutely gorgeous spot with lake, bridge, trees and flowers flowing down to the water's edge.  Some poppies down this road too.

FM 660: large BB field between FM 813 / FM 660 intersection and Union Hill Rd.  2 painters were out there recording the scene.

Cody Rd, Lone Oak Rd, Old Telico Rd:  large BB fields.

As usual I grabbed a few pix but could really have done with more time to fully work some of the scenes so they're more of the scouting report style.  These will give you a taste of what Ennis has to offer - it's claim to be the Bluebonnet Capitol of Texas could well be true this year!  Go this next week if you can.

Thanks for the very timely update!

Your report confirms my hopes and my expected timing. When I went there in 2005, it was around the 15th. I found that was a bit early for the fields and a bit late for the roads. However, 2005 was not the best of years for Ennis.

I have traveled all the roads on the Ennis maps. You can follow my notes in the book and check the reports posted here from 2005 and 2006.

And others...

Also, do not forget Cedar Hill State Park...
