Update 4/5/2007: The areas along the access road near Green Mountain Rd exit are still okay for photo taking. The bluebonnets have peaked, but with the cooler weather they should last through Easter weekend.
Also, I found another area in Selma, see "Lots of Bluebonnets" for details on that area.
Update 3/26/2007: I received an email report with additional locations of bluebonnets in San Antonio. I have posted the details of that report at: http://community.wildflowerhaven.com/forums/1888/ShowPost.aspx
---------------------------------------------------
I took a short drive along North Loop 1604 today (3/24/2007). The spots I outlined in the following post are now covered with bluebonnets:
http://community.wildflowerhaven.com/forums/1764/ShowPost.aspx
There are several long stretches of bluebonnets in full bloom with 70-100% heavy coverage between Judson and Green Mountain Road exits along North Loop 1604.
There are three relatively safe spots to pull over and get that "kids in the bluebonnets" photo. (Note: Follow the instructions posted at the Texas Department of Public Safety website - http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/director_staff/public_information/pr032602.htm ). Please please do not trample the bluebonnets. Pick a bare spot to put the kids in the bluebonnets or at least pick a spot already trampled. Each bluebonnet plant trampled is one less that will reseed that area.
- Southside Loop 1604 access road east of Green Mountain Rd : Take the Green Mountain Rd exit. On the southside access road just east of Green Mountain Rd is a large stretch of blubonnets and a place to stop.
- Northside Loop 2604 access road east of Green Mountain Rd : Further down, the access road bends around and under Loop 1604. On the northside access road there is another nice stretch of bluebonnets with a good place to pull over on the left side of the access road. This was the safest and least traffic area that I found.
- Northside Loop 1604 access west of Green Mountain Rd: Just west of Green Mountain on the north access road is another long stretch on the left heading west.
I also found two other smaller spots:
- Fox Knoll Rd and Nacogdoches Road (inside Loop 1604).
- East Afton Oaks Blvd. and North Loop 1604. (Afton Oaks is the drive that runs in front of Clear Springs Restaurant which is the home of the best onion rings in Texas). There is also a large stretch of prairie verbena along this short drive.
Disclaimer: Stop along any highway at your own risk. Sadly, each year I hear of a family injured in a traffic accident related to stopping to take photos of wildflowers. Please be careful out there!
Here is one photo from today's trip:
Taken along the southside Loop 1604 access road just east of Green Mountain Road. The roadway in the picture is Loop 1604.

Here is photo of part of the northside Loop 1604 access road just east of Green Mountain Road.
