Note: Also see Mason: Bluebonnet Heaven Has Returned...

---------------------------------------------------------

I received an email report from Mason Chamber of Commerce concerning the bluebonnets in Mason County.

Bluebonnets are blooming well in the Northeast and Northwest part of Mason County (those areas fit the rainfall maps).

"Knocked his socks off" was the phrase used by one person who visited the Chamber office from Menard. No bluebonnets were seen until the person entered Mason County (that has been my experience in past years as well).

Routes receiving good reports include:

  • RR-1900 between SH-29 and RR-2618 in NE Mason County
  • From RR-2618 to RR-386 to SH-29 is nice, but RR-1900 was heavily covered.
  • Heavy coverage was also reported on FM-1723 (runs into Simonsville Rd), south of Mason, just off US-87.

My notes: In the past, the bluebonnets along the roads in Mason are the first to bloom with the fields filling out about a week to two weeks after.  The routes mentioned above are the ones I would expect to be doing well right now. With the combination of the rain and sunshine in the past two weeks, I would expect the fields to follow soon.

I was in the Pontotoc area Tuesday. Union Band Cemetery (on Hwy 71 between Fredonia and Pontotoc) is thick with Bluebonnets. More than 2005.
Also the old abandonded building at the corner of 501 and 71 has a good amount of Bluebonnets in the field next to it.

Thanks for the update Carl.

How about the fields in Mason?

Did you travel down Hay Spring road?

I didn't roam off Hwy 71. There were a lot of Bluebonnets along the roadsides and some fields between Llano and Pontotoc. There were good roadside displays along 501 from Pontotoc to Cherokee, but no big fields that I saw.

Thanks Carl,

That seems to fit with my experience of the area. The fields usually are about a week to 10 days behind the roadsides. It might just be my imagination, but in Llano County and Gillespie County it seems the fields are doing better than the roadsides this year.
