Great deOsee,
Now we have one bluebell that can be cared for and perhaps generate seeds for more.

This is the time for bluebell gentians to bloom...they prefer areas near water or drainage areas where water seeps or drains.

There are only a few really good spots that I have found in the Hill Country.

I have several acres of them on Hwy.107, about 1 1/2 miles east of Moody, Tx.  They're very visisble from the hi-way.  If gate is open you're welcome to drive in and take a closer look.

Hi RichO,

I  live  in Sabine  County  on Toledo Bend Lake and just  discovered  the  beautiful  Bluebell  growing  on  the side  of  the  highway !!  I've  been  here  for  2  decades and  these  are  the  first  I've  ever  seen.  Odd.  I'm hoping  to  catch  some  seeds  off  these  plants',  to  add to my  wildflower  garden.  OMG!!  I  forgot !!The  state  has  just  started mowing  the  easement  too!  Darn,  they're  just  coming in to  bloom.  Any  ideas'  on  how  to  save  them?  Maybe transplant  them?

Find out who is actually doing the mowing. TXDOT does put out a schedule to their contractors to avoid mowing while wildflowers are blooming. I found and been told of instances where this rule was not always followed. County also maintains roads, so it could be a county contract.

The Texas Native Plant Society can also be contacted to help. They are experts in the art of collecting seeds. Find a chapter near you and contact them.
See their chapter list at:

I live just outside Waxahachie, slightly south. Two weeks ago, this amazing patch of royal purple appeared in an unfenced field near our house. Sunday, curiosity got the best and I picked a flower. Research proved it was a Texas Bluebell, a flower I'd never seen or heard of before. Absolutely magnificent! Howard Garret says they've been nearly picked out of existence. I want seeds! Do you know where they can be found?

Hi Nana,
Yes...Native American Seed Company is the best source that I have found...here is the link their page on the bluebell.

I found one stand of bluebells at McKinney Roughs Nature Park.  Not in the areas around the building where they have landscaped with natives, but in a ditch between the staff parking and the main building - surrounded by little bluestem.

Thanks for the report and photo, texasnature. The area sounds like it would be conducive to bluebells.

The park has a river running it through it, so there could be other spots where the bluebell could grow.

Finding Texas Bluebells is like finding gold as the water and sand run out of the pan and the yellow nugget is left. It doesn't matter where or when you find them it is always exciting :D Thanks for sharing the location and your photo!!
Flowers will brighten your day whether mild or wild, Murry!

I was returning home from vacation in West Texas late last week and decided to take a brief sojourn past a couple locations in Washington County to check for bluebells.  In several areas where I've previously viewed them, there were indeed a few specimens, but only in small quantities.

However, just north of Burton on FM390 (near the aptly named Wildflower Rd.), I ran into the largest stand of bluebells (by far) that I've ever seen.  There are probably 4-5 acres in the valley with at least 80% coverage, and perhaps an acre or two with 100% coverage - but the most densely populated portion of the field is a fair distance back from the highway.

It's more than worth the drive out there if one can justify the cost.  Fortunately, it only "cost" me a few more miles on what was already a planned, lengthy drive home.   I may post a pic or two later in the week if I can.

- Bill.
