I was able to get out for a "whirlwind tour" on Sunday to explore a few areas that I hadn't seen yet this spring. I re-checked a few spots around Chappell Hill and Brenham, then made a big loop through Round Top, La Grange, Smithville, Flatonia, Schulenburg, Columbus, New Ulm, and back toward Nelsonville/Kenney toward sunset.
On the way out of Houston, I noticed an interesting secondary bloom of crimson clover along 290 between Fairfield and Katy/Hockley Rd. As others have reported, the blues near Brenham are being overgrown by grasses in most spots, but I also saw several previously-mowed fields with emerging wine cups - in numbers I haven't seen in years. A couple examples include Wiedeveille Church Rd. and Mount Vernon Rd. near the intersection with Old Gay Hill Rd. Hwy. 290, by the way, was an absolute zoo as soon as you crossed the Brazos - tons of people out there - so I quickly hit the back roads. :)
I found some nice areas of coreopsis scattered throughout Fayette and Colorado Counties; in Fayette County near Praha (FM 1295), there are several nice fields of bluebonnets, and just south of town, large stands of foxglove on both sides of the road. FM 532 in northern Lavaca County also has nice scattered patches/fields of blue - time was short so I didn't have a chance to fully explore the area, but I'm confident that there's more to be seen near Shiner and Hallettsville.
Along Hwy. 77 either side of Schulenburg are more nice displays of bluebonnets. Lots of coreopsis is now showing along FM 109 heading north from Coloumbus toward New Ulm.
