These are about the size of a nickel and look pretty inconspicious on the ground, but in this close-up picture, they look quite stunning, almost like a hibiscus.

I checked several sources online including this site, PBase, Gary Regners, and others and it seems to be either some kind of flax or mallow, but I'm not certain.
