I took a trip on 7/7 in search of this year's crop of bluebells, and for the first time this year, I found myself disappointed with what I found (or didn't find in this case).  I re-checked several locations where I'd seen them the past couple summers, and found next to nothing.  Apart from two areas in Grimes County with a few scattered bluebells, I saw only two other individual blooms the entire afternoon.

Perhaps the bluebell is one of those species that doesn't prefer persistent wet conditions.  Then again, maybe there are a few more out there that were just waiting for some sunshine.  Despite good vegetative growth, the lantana in my backyard refused to flower at all this summer until we saw the sun again during the last two weeks or so.  Assuming I can get some much-needed yardwork out of the way, I'll probably make another trip this weekend to see if I can find more of 2007's bluebell crop.  Meanwhile, I appended a couple shots from my 7/7 trip to this year's photo gallery:   http://imageevent.com/mpurcell/txwf2007 .

- Bill.

Bill,

Thanks for the report. It seems to be the same here in the Hill Country. Bluebells like to be near water, but perhaps the timing of the rain was the key...or perhaps competition is greater this year.
