09-23-2007, 3:03 PM RichO Joined on 02-15-2005 San Antonio, TX Posts 637 Crownridge Canyon Natural Area: Fall Bluebonnet Spotted This morning I took a hike at Crownridge Canyon Natural Area. Great place for an early morning hike/walk. The main trail (1.3 mi) is ADA approved and easy to walk. There is a .6 mi trail that is a bit more rugged and hilly. Along the main trail, I found a variety of wildflower plants (no large displays). If you want to collect some photos of some fall wildflowers, Crownridge Canyon is a great place to do it in San Antonio. Crownridge Canyon Natural Area was developed as a part of the Edwards Aquifer Protection initiative. Crown Ridge is located just north of Loop 1604 on the northwest side of San Antonio at 7222 Luskey Road. One of the surprises of the morning hike was spotting a bluebonnet blooming in the fall. It was the only one in a field of tall grass. At first, I thought it was either a very short gayfeather or very straight mealy sage bloom. I am sure these oddities due occur given the right conditions. I have found some bluebonnets blooming in the Hill Country in June. This year, I was told by a rancher that they had a field of bluebonnets still blooming in June....but to find one in almost October...well that was a surprise.   RichO Hunting Texas Wildflowers    Report
