My employer allowed us to get a head start on the Easter holiday last Friday afternoon, and knowing there would be a full moon, I just couldn't help myself and made another trip out to the Brenham area. Since Old Baylor Park was already blooming well, I set up there and waited for the show. Unfortunately, I'm not satisfied with any of my attempts to capture the rising moon and wildflowers, but I did manage to get some really nice photographs of the park near sunset.
I've begun this year's photo album, and you can see the first entries here: http://imageevent.com/mpurcell/txwf2008
I should also note that I saw some rather encouraging progress in several locations - roadsides near Hempstead had improved markedly in just five days, although coverage is still sparse-spotty. I also saw quite a few fields in northern Washington County that had young bluebonnet blooms beginning to show. It appears to me that it could be a big year for paintbrush - probably not on a "regional" scale, but from what I've seen so far, there should be some rather large isolated displays within a couple of weeks.
Once again, I doubt this season will be anything like 2007, but then again - I think it's already better than the drought year of 2005 - so overall, there should be some good wildflower hunting to be done in early April across SE Texas, and I think the season will be at least an average one.
- Bill.
