Mountain Laurel still in bloom at Friedrich Wilderness Park
Friday (4/4/2008) I took a hike along the main loop trail at Friedrich Wilderness Park which is located on the northside of San Antonio just west of I-10. I was very surprised to see that mountain laurel is still in full bloom along the main loop trail. There were numerous trees in bloom, so if you want to get some exercise today or tomorrow and see a little color along the way then head out to Friedrich Wilderness Park ( http://www.sanaturalareas.org/fp/fpmaps.html  )

Rich,
That is a surprise. The mountain laurel blooms in this area only lasted a week or ten days. With our heat and lack of rain on the north side of Houston the wildflowers are definitely on the back side of peak. It has been an early and short season.

Usually the mountain laurel is producing seedpods in San Antonio by the end of March. The mountain laurel in Friedrich Park usually peaks in mid-march (latter than the rest of the area). The latest photo of mountain laurel that I previously had was March 22nd (http://www.pbase.com/richo/image/41130330 ).
