04-06-2008, 7:07 PM RichO Joined on 02-15-2005 San Antonio, TX Posts 637 Very few bluebonnts in Government Canyon State Natural Area I visited Government Canyon State Natural Area today (4/6/2008). I checked my usual spots and found very few bluebonnets or any other wildflowers.  The field coming into the area had a few spots of bluebonnets here and there. Along the trails and near the visitor center, I saw very very few wildflowers of any kind. The wildscape in front of the visitor center was grown over with dead foliage from last year. I was a bit surprised to see the wildscape unattended and not managed like it was last year and the year before. I do not know if this is because of lack of funding or lack of volunteer help. 08-14-2008, 3:54 PM RichO Joined on 02-15-2005 San Antonio, TX Posts 637 Fall wildflowers at Government Canyon SNA Edd, I usually do not visit Government Canyon in the fall until October/November when the temps are lower and when the trees begin to turn colors. There are some wildflowers there, but mostly the same that are seen elsewhere and not necessarily in large numbers. You should find some of these at Government Canyon SNA in Sep-Nov. - Maximilian sunflower - Frostweed - Snow on the Mountain/Prairie - Turk's Cap There are others that you might also find, but not in large numbers. One special treat you might find are Monarch and Queen butterflies around the frostweed. RichO Hunting Texas Wildflowers    Report
