Cedar Hill State Park

Yesterday I visited Cedar Hill State Park. There were some bluebonnets along the park roads. Heading toward the hiking trails, I saw small patches of bluebonnets until just past Penn Farm. There was a little bit at Penn Farm as well.

But you can see the color beginning to fade already:

There were some pretty indigo colored bluebonnets:

I saw this in an open area next to the road:

Then  I saw an open field with plenty of purple flowers:

Composed of :

Here's a closeup of the flower:

These purple flowers lined some of the hiking trails. Deep into the hiking trails were patches of blue as well, hiding in small open areas among the trees.

PS Anyone know the names of the white and purple flowers?

Maybe blue stars? Check Gary's ID page here: http://www.texaswildflowerguide.com/home.htm
Thanks for the report and photos.

Flowers will brighten your day whether mild or wild, Murry!

Edd and Murry, They are Wild Hyacinth, a member of the lily family. http://community.wildflowerhaven.com/photos/identifying_wildflowers/category1032/picture1082.aspx

That field is usually in bloom this time of the year. In addition to Gary's great resource we also have a gallery here for identifying wildflowers (thanks to contributions by members here like Edd and Murry).

I just got in from my Dallas - Ennis - Cedar Hill SP trip. I am processing some photos now. I will post a separate thread. Needless to say, Cedar Hill SP is the best place I found to get any good photos of bluebonnets and other wildflowers this year in the Dallas area. Thanks Edd for the followup on Cedar Hill SP. Your report and photos convinced me to make the effort to visit there on Saturday.

I was out there on Friday and Saturday as well, but the DORBA trails were closed. I kep trying to photograph that field, but it was not so easy to get a good angle.

I am looking forward to your photos.

Prior to the Dorba trailhead there is a tall grass prairie restoration (at the boat dock area). The field on either side of the was covered with celestials, wild iris (scattered). There were also some patches of the hyacinth there.

Where is the boat dock area? Is it the big parking lot area?

What do the celestials and wild iris look like? I imagine you have some photos of these for us?

Yes, it is the big parking area you come to before the trail area. I think it is one of two boat dock areas. Look in the upper left corner of this map. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4503_131l_1.pdf

You will see the Native Tall grass prairie on either side of the road running down to the large parking area. I will post some photos of the celestials (wild iris) from my recent visit. A close-up photo of one is located here:

http://community.wildflowerhaven.com/photos/identifying_wildflowers/picture546.aspx

Here is a close up of a group of celestials that I spotted at Cedar Hill State Park.

Rich:

The second link does not work.

I shot some of the celestials on Friday. It seems that they are morning flowers since I arrive in the late afternoon and they were already wilting and shriveling up.
