Hill Country Report from April 5

I took a drive on Saturday (4/5) to check out the wildflowers in the Hill Country. Very disappointing. I would have to say it's the worst showing of bluebonnets I've seen in probably 10 years. If I had to rate the wildflowers this year from what I saw, I'd give it a 1 out of 10.
- FM 1431 from Cedar Park to Jonestown to Marble Falls to Kingland to Hwy 29 - virtually no bluebonnets at all, only a few small patches along the road.
- Hwy 281 north of Marble Falls - a few bluebonnets on the sides of the road only; famous stone barn just north of Marble Falls has no bluebonnets at all this year
- Old Spanish Trail (just west of the junction of Hwy 29 and FM1431) - usually the lots along this road are covered in paintbrush, this area has so few this year you could literally count them; there were some large patches of bright yellow bladderpod though
- Inks Lake State Park - very few wildflowers, bluebonnets are uncommon and only on the sides of the road; hiked one of the trails and saw a few solitary paintbrush and rain lilies
- Hwy 29 from Inks Lake to Burnet to Bertram to Seward Junction (Hwy 183) - some scattered bluebonnets along the road along with some other wildflowers, but not many
Wish the news was better. I'm looking forward to checking out the Brenham and Houston area, the reports from that region sound much more promising.
