Bluebells in bloom
Reply Quote

As is the case with most everyone, gas prices have significantly curtailed my ability to travel this year, and I've been going absolutely stir crazy the past couple months.  I finally took a drive on Sunday in search of this year's bluebell crop, and enjoyed an incredibly relaxing afternoon.  Man, was it good to be out on the road again.

Bluebells are doing quite well this year - many are in bloom and more are on the way.   This year's hot spot is Montgomery.  There's a nice field on the north side of TX 105 right between the high school and the football stadium.  Just southwest of town on Spring Branch Rd. - about a quarter-mile south of the intersection with Old Plantersville - there's a large field with significant coverage, maybe 60%.  Just west of the aforementioned intersection, there's a new home being built on Old Plantersville and the entire back yard is solid purple!

I added a few of the photographs to my 2008 album ... images 16-20 are new.  http://imageevent.com/mpurcell/txwf2008

Enjoy,

Bill.

Hi Bill!

Thanks for the report and great photos!

Sadly, I have been city-bound due to work and the rising fuel costs. I wish I could get out and see one of my favorite wildflowers of the summer.

Hey Bill,
Thanks for the report and terrific photos! Montgomery is close enough that I might be able to do that? It's tough to weigh the cost of gas against the expected results--almost like work. The only good thing for me it has forced me to get back on my project of converting old slides and negatives to digital files--what a boring job compared to being on the back roads. Thanks again for the inspiration!!

Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me, but there are quite a few bluebells blooming in fields along 290 west of Brenham.

I got out on the 5th and took in the areas that Bill documented and the one field is amazing. There is a SOLD sign on the fence so I wonder how long it will exist? I went up FM 1097 west of Montgomery where I had seen alot of bluebells a year of two ago? But there was just a smattering now and one big field had been plowed under. There were also just a few on TX 90 coming into Anderson but they were in really rough shape and everything was very dry!
You can find my photos here: http://grigsbys.smugmug.com/gallery/4439942_4jSjS/6
I'll get captions on them later but most were shot in the field on Spring Branch Road that Bill told us about. It was really nice to get on the back roads again but this time it cost $30 for gas.
