I found a field of Blue Bells in Killeen. I didn't know what it was but found it to be most beautiful.

I dug one up (which was not easy because the dirt it was growing is was rock hard) and I took it to a nursery for ID. After looking through several books we finally ID'ed it as a Texas Blue Bell.

I planted it in a pot and it is doing great. New growth is coming up through the dirt. Now I am wondering what to do with it. Everything I read says it likes moist soil but where I found it was anything but moist. I have plenty of land to plant it. I have sunny dry areas, filter light dry areas and sunny moist areas. Any suggestions will be appreciated as I really want to preserve this plant.

From what I've read Texas bluebells don't fair well as trans-plants but prefer to reseed themselves. Most of the ones I've seen have been in open fields with plenty of sunshine and not too much moister. Good luck!

The best way to preserve wildflowers is to leave them be (don't dig them up) and let them do their own thing so everyone can enjoy them. Next time take a photo and post it here or take it to a nursery for identification and then buy seeds or plants from a place like the Wild Seed Farm or a nursery if you want plants of your own. To see a couple links to bluebell photos go to the East Texas section of this site.
Flowers will brighten your day whether mild or wild, Murry!

Hi Susan,
Murry is correct...the best option is to leave them be and if you want collect a few seeds to reseed at a different location.

Here is a link to a good resource of both seeds and information on planting/caring for specific species of wildflowers.

http://www.seedsource.com/catalog/detail.asp?product_id=3061

This link is to the Bluebell page.

Let us know how your transplant does. And let us know where the field is located.

Thanks for the report...
