Fall foliage near Palestine

I'm quite envious of all those who have been able to make it out to Lost Maples - it looks tremendous this year!   My only opportunity to visit there in '08 would probably be near Thanksgiving, well after the best color - but who knows, I may have to do it anyway.  :)

Unable to make that trip at the moment, I decided to head out well before dawn on Sunday morning toward Palestine (Anderson County) to be there near sunrise, in hope that I'd find something compelling to photograph.  I think it worked out nicely.  Just after sunrise, I came upon a gorgeous mirror-lake on a county road, as radiation fog was rising in a layer 3-4 feet off the water.  It was an amazing sight!

I then spent a good part of the day in Davey Dogwood Park on the north side of Palestine.  There were some wonderful colors out there, and it was a major stress-reliever to just be outside and enjoy the near-silence.  The only sounds were birds calling, the breeze through the trees, and the sound of falling leaves lazily hitting the ground all around me.  That was a good day ...

Here are a few of the images I captured on Sunday:  http://imageevent.com/mpurcell/txff2008

Thanks for the report Bill..great photos as usual!
It sounds like you found a few great spots...and I know what you mean about the stress relief from being outside with just a few birds or the wind singing through the branches breaking the silence.

Lost Maples this year is having a good year, but the problem is that the trees with the really deep red leaves are losing their leaves.

I might be returning the weekend of the 22nd...I will let you know if there is anything left on the trees to see by then. I am planning to get there really early in the morning and hit the east trail near the main visitor parking and head toward the rim to the ponds on the backside.

Terrific photos Bill -- they make a nice slideshow! I always forget about Davey Dogwood Park in the fall. If you go to Lost Maples I hope the cypress trees along 27 & 39 out of Kerrville are still as beautiful as they were a couple weeks ago? I agree it is always good to just get out in the countryside even if there is nothing to shoot :0)
Flowers will brighten your day whether mild or wild, Murry!
