Bastrop-LaGrange-Nelsonville-Brenham-Independence report
Reply Quote

This past weekend (April 2-3, 2005) was very rewarding wildflower viewing along the following route:

  • TX71 from Bastrop to the Fayetteville cutoff (east of La Grange) had a plentiful mix of flowers along the shoulders and median.
  • TX159 from Fayetteville to Nelsonville had several small patches of flowers, including a nice mixed bouquet in Industry.
  • FM2754 in Austin county from Nelsonville to Kinney (TX36) had 2 spectacular fields.  The 1st was paintbrush and bluebonnets which had access through an open gate and a cattle guard crossing.  The 2nd was an open field of brilliant yellows (bitterweed?) and bluebonnets.  The contrasting colors and vastness of the field was breathtaking.

  • After a lunch stop at the Southern Flyer Diner (a yummy, fun, 50's style eatery at the Brenham airport) we took TX50 to Independence.  There were several nice patches of wildflowers along the way.
  • The Antique Rose Emporium at Independence makes for a fascinating stop to wander around their grounds and gardens.  There was a nice field of paintbrush/bluebonnets behind their chapel that made for a nice photo op.
  • Old Baylor Park, TX390, Independence, had a nice display of mostly paintbrush this year, whereas years past there was a nice mix of bluebonnets & paintbrush.
  • TX390, which is a designated state scenic highway, is a pleasant drive through rural central Texas' rolling hills and farmlands.  It had scattered patches of various wildflowers, but nothing on the order of the ones on FM2754.

You're welcome to browse our Wildflower Weekend album for more wildflower pictures from the above trip and from around Bastrop, our hometown.

Thank you for an excellent report and lovely photos. I visited your gallery and enjoyed it very much.

Do you think there are more bluebonnets to come?

The wildflowers seem to be blooming late in our area this year.  I suspect they're just approaching their peak, which seems to be typical of other reports I've read in this and other forums.

I was all hyped to do the Willow City Loop again, but, after reading your earlier report, decided to explore the back roads closer to home.  Austin & Washington counties are always a good bet for finding plentiful wildflower displays.

Brenda,

Thanks for viewing my album and offering up such kind words.  I think we're just now approaching peak wildflower viewing in our area.  I noticed a lot more pink evening primroses around Bastrop today where there weren't any last weekend.  Should be a great weekend for Texploring the backroads around central Texas (weather permitting).

Jack
