Bluebonnets Blooming in Bloomington
Reply Quote

The March 4, 2006 issue of the Victoria Advocate, reports that bluebonnets are blooming in Bloomington.

http://www.thevictoriaadvocate.com/front/story/3362444p-3891378c.html

Bloomington is a small community located 14 miles southeast of Victoria on SH-185.

Victoria is located 116 miles southeast of San Antonio on US 87.

Based on my analysis of fall and winter rainfall, the Coastal area around Victoria did get sufficient rainfall to support a fair to average growth of bluebonnets and other wildflowers.

Update: Please note that the photo in this article was taken of bluebonnets growing in someone's yard where they likely got more water than bluebonnet plants out in the fields.

Well for the area near Victoria the rainfall averages this fall/winter were closer to normal, so they should be close to full bloom by the third week in March.

A bit west of that area and the extent of the bloom could be much less.

I hate to be non-specific, but pinpointing the exact time is just not possible. That is why "wildflower sightings" are so important to a wildflower hunter. :)

I might be doing a "seedling" and pre-season check of the Hill Country...mainly Mason and Llano Counties.

If you are interested, I would like to travel with you and see exactly what you are looking for and how you conduct your searches. Either we can travel together or I can follow in another vehicle. My wife may even join us. If you need additional information about me to reassure you that I am really interested and I am really not a danger to you, please let me know.

thanks!

I received a message from Mary Wood of the DeWitt Historical Museum which houses the Wildflower Headquarters and she said the first two weeks of April are usually the best time for viewing. But as you say, it is very hard to predict what actually will happen.

My "seedling" investigation trips are not worth the effort for someone to "learn" anything from me. I am usually rushing to get through a long distance or making a short trip (like to Willow City or Government Canyon SNA).

As I said before, we might want to get a group together at Cedar Hill State Park later in April. I am also going to be in the Mason area for volunteer training the first week in April.

I would be interested in seeing the seedling check up so that I could participate in posting wildflower sightings.

I am interested in a group gettogether in April. During the first week of April, I will be with some photographers from the Texas Photo Forum in Big Bend National Park (see iternerary). Do you have any idea if there will be some wildflowers flowering at this time?

Let me know when in April and where the group will meet in Cedar Hill State Park and I should be there! If there is something happening in San Antonio, I could make that as well. I will probably be in the Victoria are the weekend of March 17 - 19.
