Does anyone have an update on this year's bluebonnets or cactus blooming times?

Your best bet is to review South Texas Fall 2005 – Winter 2006 Report and continue to check back here for updates.

I will be in Big Bend during the first week of April and I will share what I see in this forum.

I will also be in the Big Bend, Ft. Davis area the weekend of April 1.  I understand through a friend in the Marfa that the bluebonnets are starting to bloom; I'll have to call him and ask for more information.  Will relay to you.

Hi Mary!

I guess I don't know Big Bend that well. Are Shafter and Lajitas roads or towns? Is the river you are refering to the Rio Grande River?

Anything else flowering?

thanks!

Lajitas is a small community along RR-170 near the borders of Big Bend State Ranch and Big Bend National Park. RR-170 (El Camino del Rio) runs along the Rio Grande through Big Bend State Ranch from Lajitas to Presidio.

Edd,

It's a breathtakingly spectacular drive from Terlingua to Lajitas (hopefully the road construction has been completed) and then Redman, Presidio, Shafter and finishing in Marfa.  Allow 6 hours, it's a very narrow road with many curves and few areas to allow for passing.  The Highway Patrol patrol the highway so do not speed.  ( I learned my lesson last year.)

If this is your first visit to the Big Bend area, I would suggest the National Park..............it is worth the drive!

Mary,

Based on rainfall analysis alone, there were parts of the Big Bend area that got about average rainfall in the fall-winter time period. I would interested in any information from your contacts about the wildflower bloom in that area. I was planning a trip to Big Bend State Ranch this year, but due to the lack of rain I felt it would not be a good year.

RichO and Ed,

I just spoke with the owner of the bed and breakfast in Ft. Davis and see reports that there are a few bluebonnets along Highway 118 from the National Park and the Yuccas are starting to bloom along the road from Ft. Davis to Alpine.  I will be receiving an update on Big Bend from someone who is visiting the park.  I understand there were wildfires in the Basin last week.

I have been there before and I was camping off the South Rim. You are so right that Big Bend is worth the drive. This time around I will be with a small group of photographers and the one who is leading is a Big Bend veteran. Should be some great fun!!

If you have the time try to visit the Davis Mountain State Park and Moonlight Gemstones in Marfa.

Which way do you travel to the Big Bend area? Have you been to the State Ranch...I assume you have if you have traveled 170.

Yes, I have been to Big Bend Ranch State Park several times; unfortunately I have scheduled other activities for this year's visit.

I will be leaving Dallas and driving to Austin to pick up my companion and onward to Sonora, Ozona and then on to Ft. Davis.  I usually break up the trip by staying overnight in Sonora.  Last year the wildflowers were absolutely gorgeous from Ozona to Ft. Stockton.

Rich,

I usually travel south on 67 through Cleburne, Dublin (got to have my "real" DP fix), Brownwood, Santa Anna and then Sonora for the night.  Onward on Highway 10 to Ft. Davis.  It's a long drive from Dallas.
