My backyard bluebonnets / wildflower planter, 2006

I've posted the first batch of chronological images of my planter to the following site:   http://imageevent.com/mpurcell/bb2006

My bluebonnets have made amazing progress, and I'm excited to have blooms in February!

Enjoy,

Bill Purcell.

Looks like you have a good batch there.

I'm not surprised you have a few early bloomers. The warm winter we have had has probably encouraged them to start a bit earlier, but the peak will still be closer to April even for your planter blubonnets.

That raises an interesting question...how much can one alter the normal growing/bloom pattern of wildflowers in planters/green houses.

Thanks for sharing your photos and work with us.

I've updated the page with some additional images from this past week.  The first 8 images on the page were just "documentary" shots I took with my 35mm to monitor the progress of the planter.  Now that I have some mature blooms, I did some real photography with my new Canon 20D, and posted some higher-res pictures.

Hope you enjoy them ... I know I do.  Smile [:)]

Awesome Bill...

Once the bluebonnet thinks it is the right time to bloom they waste no time growing and shooting up a bloom stalk.

Now you have piqued my curiosity ... how long does it take for the bluebonnet to go from no flower to flower once it starts the process?

thanks!

I have not found anything written that gives the time period. Dr. Jean Andrews states in "The Texas Bluebonnet" that the blooming period is about one month. The bluebonnets in my rock garden tripled in size within 10 days and one is now supporting 4 bloom stalks. My personal experience has been that an area can dramatically change in blooms from one week to the next.

Here are three photos taken of the same spot at Willow City Loop from

3/21/2004 to 4/6/2004
