Luling: Gander Slough Road

Trip date: 3/25/2006
Route traveled: US 90, Gander Slough Road, Oil Field Road.

Based on a report posted at "Wild About Texas Wildflowers", I went to investigate Gander Slough Road which runs between the Kingsbury and Luling, home of the Luling Watermelon Festival.

Gander Slough Road intersects US 90 about 1 mile east of Kingsbury, loops around and intersects US 90 again about 4 miles west of Luling. Oil Field Road joins Gander Slough Road and connects to US 80 north of Luling. Oil Field Road is rightly named as it runs throughs several active oil fields, some with smelly natural gas - avoid this road unless you love the smell of gas and oil.

The part of Gander Slough Road that I traveled was moderately covered at times with primarily showy primrose mixed at times with a few bluebonnets, wine cups, groundsel, Texas star, paintbrush, phlox, and verbena. The showy primrose covered the shoulders of the road at times and was spreading into the adjoining fields. I have seen denser and larger displays of showy primrose, but the coverage along Gander Slough Road was very nice.

Showy primrose is a perennial and thus not as dependent on fall rains as annuals are, so it is doing a bit better that most of the annuals in areas that have been getting good rainfall in the past 30 days.

In a good year, Gander Slough Road should be a very lovely drive to see a variety of wildflowers, this year looks to be about 50-60% of what it could be.

I have recently come to Texas and am now at San Marcos.  I'm thinking of going to Fredericksburg the first week of April.

Since the Wildflower Celebration at Wildseed Farm starts on April 4th I would like to attend that the first week.

What would be the best country route for me to travel from San Marcos to Fredericksberg to see the most wildflowers & hill country scenery? I would like to avoid a lot of traffic.

Please be very specific as I don't yet know my way around central & hill country Texas at all.

I know how to pull up a map on search engines & will buy a map but would still like your advice on how to get from here to there on scenic backroads.

Thanks for any replies,

Agapanthus

Here is a suggested route that will take you through some very scenic parts of the eastern Hill Country.

  • San Marcos to Wimberly via RR-12, from Wimberly take FM-2325 to FM-165, take FM-165 to Blanco
  • From Blanco take FM-1888 to FM-1623, take FM-1623 to Stonewall.
  • From Stonewall take US 290 to Wildseed Farms
  • From Wildseed Farms take US 290 to Fredricksburg
  • If you have time visit Willow City Loop (16 miles north of Fredericksburg via SH-16)
  • From Fredericksburg return via US 290 to US 281 at Johnson City.
  • Take US 281 to FM-32 just south of Blanco, take southeast to RR-12, take RR-12 south to San Marcos

I'm not sure you will see many wildflowers this year, but the ride will be enjoyable.

I live in San Marcos.  My suggestion would be to go out RR 12 and keep going straight when RR 12 turns off to Wimberley.  You are now on RR 32; continue to where it deadends at HWY 281 and go right.  Go through Blanco.

You want to turn left on 4th Street  which becomes River Road (FM 1623).  Stay on River Road when it splits from FM 1623 and follows FM 1888.  Drive FM 1888 and it turns into Lindendale Road.

Drive FM 1888 until it ends at FM 1376, go right.  Follow FM 1376 and go through Luckenbach, TX (Willie and Waylon and the gang song).  Stop and send a post card to someone outside Texas old enouigh to know Willie Nelson.

You will deadend at US Hwy 290.  Go left.  Drive on into Fredericksburg.

You may also go through Austin to get to US 290, but its much prettier this way.
