Trip date: 3/25/2006 Route traveled: US 90, Gander Slough Road, Oil Field Road.
Based on a report posted at "Wild About Texas Wildflowers", I went to investigate Gander Slough Road which runs between the Kingsbury and Luling, home of the Luling Watermelon Festival.
Gander Slough Road intersects US 90 about 1 mile east of Kingsbury, loops around and intersects US 90 again about 4 miles west of Luling. Oil Field Road joins Gander Slough Road and connects to US 80 north of Luling. Oil Field Road is rightly named as it runs throughs several active oil fields, some with smelly natural gas - avoid this road unless you love the smell of gas and oil.
The part of Gander Slough Road that I traveled was moderately covered at times with primarily showy primrose mixed at times with a few bluebonnets, wine cups, groundsel, Texas star, paintbrush, phlox, and verbena. The showy primrose covered the shoulders of the road at times and was spreading into the adjoining fields. I have seen denser and larger displays of showy primrose, but the coverage along Gander Slough Road was very nice.
Showy primrose is a perennial and thus not as dependent on fall rains as annuals are, so it is doing a bit better that most of the annuals in areas that have been getting good rainfall in the past 30 days.
In a good year, Gander Slough Road should be a very lovely drive to see a variety of wildflowers, this year looks to be about 50-60% of what it could be.
